André Figueiredo

André Figueiredo is a PhD student under the Doctoral Program in Environment and Sustainability at NOVA School of Science and Technology from NOVA University of Lisbon since 2021. His PhD research topic is related to the assessment and optimization of activated sludge electroflotation towards oxygen and hydrogen recovery and reuses in Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP), promoting Circular Economy strategies in the water sector and contributing towards the UN’s 2030 SDGs.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering - Sanitary Engineering field (2018) from the same Institution (FCT-NOVA). His master thesis research work assessed undue inflows of saltwater in coastal wastewater collection systems and their impacts on anaerobic digestion and renewable energy production in WWTP.

Since 2017 he has collaborated and worked for some national water utilities in main areas, such as: Operation and Maintenance (O&M); Project Design and Construction; Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) (contacting with ongoing European research projects in WWTP, e.g.: CircRural4.0, artICA4nr, LIFE iMPETUS). These opportunities provided valuable field experience and research skills using collaborative and integrative approaches.

Key areas of interest are water treatment, water supply systems, wastewater collection systems and wastewater treatment and reuse. He has research work published as first author in peer-reviewed international journals.
